president obama's decision to pull tops out of afghanistan is still drawing criticism tonight. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from the white house. >> reporter: president obama spoke with soldiers at fort drum, explaining why he wants to start winding down the mission in afghanistan. >> we're not doing it precipitously. we're going to do it in a steady way to make sure that the game gain -- gainsa thal of you helped to bring about are going to be sustained. >> reporter: the base is home to many soldiers serving on the front lines in afghanistan. and many are happy with the president's decision to withdraw more than 30,000 troops by the end of next summer. the president says progress on the ground made his decision possible and that afghans are on track to take control of their security by 2014. >> reporter: but some lawmakers are criticizing the president's plan. some democrats say the withdrawal is too slow. and some republicans worry, we could lose ground. >> with the taliban stumbling, we need a strategy designed to knock the enemy to the mat, not give them a breather.
